ZAMFARA STATE — One person was killed while 11 travellers abducted during a bandit attack along the Gummi–Sokoto Road were rescued by the Zamfara State Police Command.
The command disclosed that the attack occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday when suspected bandits ambushed a trailer conveying vegetables and passengers.
According to a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Yazid Abubakar, the gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, causing the driver to lose control and veer off the road.
One passenger, identified as Dan Fati Umar of Gidan Ganja, Bukuyum Local Government Area, was killed during the attack, while another sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical treatment.
“On 21st July 2026, at about 10:30 a.m., a large number of armed bandits ambushed a trailer transporting vegetables and other passengers along the Gummi–Sokoto Road. During the attack, the assailants opened fire on the vehicle, causing the driver to lose control and veer off the road,” the statement read.
“Tragically, one passenger lost his life during the incident, while another victim sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical attention. The bandits abducted an unspecified number of passengers.”
However, following a swift response by police operatives and other security personnel, 11 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued. The rescued victims have since been reunited with their families.
The Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Muhammad Bello, condoled with the family of the deceased and wished the injured victim a speedy recovery. He also assured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and urged the public to continue providing credible information to security agencies.
The latest rescue came amid intensified military operations against terrorists across the North-West. Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA recently rescued three kidnapped victims in Katsina State after they escaped from a terrorist hideout during a heavy downpour.
