LAGOS — The slain organising secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya, was laid to rest in Ketu, Lagos, on Tuesday amid emotional scenes from family members, colleagues, friends, and supporters.
Viral videos seen showed a large crowd of mourners paying their last respects to the union leader.
Ajiboye died after succumbing to gunshot injuries sustained when unidentified gunmen attacked his vehicle in the Fadeyi area of Lagos on Sunday evening.
The Lagos State Police Command had earlier confirmed the attack and said a manhunt was underway for the assailants.
Reacting to the killing, the Lagos State NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye as a loyal ally, dependable friend, and committed union leader.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. He was more than an ally; he was a trusted friend and a true pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation. His friendship, unwavering support and selfless dedication to the union will forever remain etched in my heart,” he said.
The burial sparked reactions on social media, with many users expressing grief and speculating about the circumstances surrounding Ajiboye’s killing. Some commenters suggested that the killer might have been among the mourners, while others expressed sadness over the continued violence within transport unions.
