FG Launches CNG Transport Programme In Kano

In a move aimed at cutting transportation costs and giving commuters a smoother ride, the Federal Government has officially launched the Northern Corridor of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicle Programme in Kano — a city often described as the commercial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria.

The launch signals a major shift toward cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable transportation, especially at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with rising fuel prices and expensive travel costs.

Representing Vice President Kashim Shettima at the event, his Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Hadeja, said the initiative is expected to improve inter-city transportation, ease the movement of goods and services, and energize economic activities across Kano and neighboring states.

For a city like Kano, where thousands of traders, commuters, and transport operators move daily between markets and business centers, transportation is more than convenience — it is the engine that keeps commerce alive. The introduction of cleaner energy vehicles is therefore being seen as both an economic and environmental game changer.

At the heart of the rollout are 200 tricycles and 40 CNG-powered vehicles introduced under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Government officials say the vehicles are designed to provide safer, cleaner, and more affordable mobility options for residents.

The initiative is also expected to reduce dependence on traditional fuel, lower carbon emissions, and create fresh opportunities in Nigeria’s growing green transportation sector.

Speaking at the event, Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, Ismaeel Ahmed, revealed that the Federal Government plans to expand the programme to more states before the end of 2026, signaling that the transition to alternative energy transportation may soon spread across the country.

For many residents and transport operators, the project offers hope that daily commuting and business transportation could become less stressful and more affordable in the near future.
