Team Nigeria concluded its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a commendable seventh-place finish, amassing 24 medals and emerging as the top-performing African nation.
The Nigerian delegation recorded 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals across athletics, weightlifting, para-sports, and judo, outpacing continental rivals South Africa and Kenya in the final standings.
Australia dominated the overall rankings with 171 medals, including 70 gold, while England secured second place with 110 medals. Canada, India, Scotland, and New Zealand rounded out the top six positions.
Several Nigerian athletes delivered career-defining performances on the track and field. Samuel Ogazi made history by clinching gold in the men’s 400 metres with a time of 44.25 seconds, becoming the first Nigerian to win the Commonwealth title in the event. Ezekiel Nathaniel similarly etched his name in the record books, securing victory in the men’s 400m hurdles as the first Nigerian man to achieve the feat.
In field events, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi captured Nigeria’s inaugural Commonwealth gold medal in men’s shot put, while Ruth Usoro earned silver in the women’s long jump with one of her finest performances to date. Udodi Onwuzurike improved upon his Birmingham 2022 sixth-place finish by claiming silver in the men’s 200 metres. Ella Onojuvwevwo ended Nigeria’s 32-year medal drought in the women’s 400 metres by securing bronze. World record holder Tobi Amusan added another accolade to her distinguished career with a bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Nigeria’s relay squads also made significant contributions. The mixed 4x400m team earned bronze in the event’s Commonwealth Games debut, while the men’s 4x100m quartet secured bronze following Canada’s disqualification after a successful appeal.
Beyond athletics, weightlifters, para-athletes, and judokas played crucial roles in bolstering the nation’s medal tally, underscoring Nigeria’s competitive depth across multiple disciplines.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games featured athletes from over 74 nations and territories competing across 10 sports, with 1,168 medals contested across 215 events. Organisers reported that more than 630,000 spectators attended competitions and festival activities during the 11-day event, with over 4,000 volunteers contributing more than 156,000 hours of service. The Games generated nearly half a billion views across social media platforms.
