Ibadan – Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for United Nations investigation into the Oriire abduction incident has drawn sharp criticism from the Senate, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and legal experts.
The Senate passed a motion commending President Tinubu and security agencies for the successful rescue operation, with Senator Adams Oshiomhole arguing the governor’s comments trivialized sacrifices made by security personnel.
Nigeria’s UN Permanent Representative Senator Jimoh Ibrahim clarified that the UN has no mandate to investigate domestic security incidents, urging Makinde to instead focus on victim welfare and rehabilitation.
Senior Advocates of Nigeria, including Femi Falana and Damilola Olawuyi, noted the governor’s request was inconsistent with UN Charter provisions and lacked jurisdictional merit.
