Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo dies at 40

Nollywood is mourning the heartbreaking loss of beloved actor and model Alex Ekubo, whose charm, talent, and screen presence made him one of the industry’s most recognizable faces.

The actor, born Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke, reportedly passed away on Tuesday in Lagos after quietly battling a long-term illness. He was 40 years old.

Fans had noticed his sudden disappearance from public life over the past several months. Since late 2024, the usually vibrant movie star had stepped away from film projects, social events, and even social media, sparking concern among followers who admired both his work and personality.

Born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Alex hailed from Arochukwu in Abia State. Standing tall both physically and professionally, the six-foot actor became one of Nollywood’s favorite leading men thanks to his smooth charisma and unforgettable romantic roles.

Alex began acting in 2003, but his breakthrough came after starring in the hit Nollywood movie “Weekend Getaway,” which quickly turned him into a household name. From there, he became a familiar face in popular films like “Lagos Cougars,” “A Man for the Weekend,” and “The Escort,” winning over audiences with his effortless performances, humor, and style.

Beyond acting, Alex also made waves in modeling. In 2010, he emerged as the first runner-up in the prestigious “Mr Nigeria” competition, a moment that helped cement his celebrity status.

But his impact went beyond entertainment.

In 2020, the United Nations recognized him as one of the “Most Influential People of African Descent,” honoring his contributions to African entertainment and social development. It was a proud moment not just for Alex, but for Nollywood as a whole.

Tributes have continued pouring in from fans, actors, and celebrities across Africa, many remembering him as more than just a talented actor. To many, Alex Ekubo represented confidence, elegance, hard work, and the modern face of Nollywood.

Though his journey has come to an end, the films, memories, and smiles he gave millions of people will continue to live on.

Nollywood has truly lost one of its brightest stars.
